Greetings, and a hearty welcome to issue three. I apologize for the lateness of the installment, but between the insane hours my job (urk!) wants from me due to some new incoming traffic, it's all I can do to see the inside of my home firsthand. Anyway, you're probably not interested in all of that so.... let us plow onward!
This issue has no major feature, unlike the first two. However, I've put together a few things that you may well like. First on the list is something for a game people either love to death or kill people for mentioning... I refer to none other than
POKéMON/Pocket Monsters! Anyone wishing to hang me from the rafters for simply mentioning this game
can kindly press click the Self-Destruct button on their browser. :)
Namely, this little item is a restorative art patch for the bastard American POKéMON Red Version which turns a fair portion of the art in the game bact to what the real Red Version actually looked like. (Nintendo of America used the Blue Version graphics for both games in the U.S.) Some screen shots are below.
First pic is the authentic Red Version, the U.S. game in the middle, and finally the Red Fix.






You'll notice the different graphic for the
Clefairy/Pippi
on the title screen. The U.S. game used the Blue Version graphic and those graphics are pretty hard-encoded. I've not been able to patch the POKéMON back to what they were supposed to look like in Red, but if someone can recommend some good tools, I'll see to it. Also, You'll notice the main character's outfit is like the one in Red, but he's standing in the Blue pose. Why? Well, I was forced to use a blend of the graphics there because when I had him pointing skyward, he had a tendency to toss up part of his hand and catch it. Rather amusing, but not very effective. :) So I'm taking this compromise until I can work out how to stop the ball-tossing animation.
In the town screens, notice the drastic differences on all aspects of the U.S. game in the middle... the terrain, roofs, and signs. I've fixed those as thoroughly as I have been able so far (see the last picture).
For those of you concerned, your old saved game works fine under a patched Red, and you can still trade just fine. With a Doctor GB Exchanger you should be able to take your fixed Red on the go and trade just fine with people with regular games as well. (Note: For those of you who don't know how to trade with an emulator, a detailed set of instructions can be found here. Though it's not documented there, you can trade safely between different colors... just walk outside the POKéCenter before you save, then copy your games back.) Bare Knuckle II vs. Streets of Rage 2
(Round Two)
All right, we've finally got it! Or at least a facsimile of it! With an emulator or a hardware switch, you can play Bare Knuckle II on a Streets of Rage 2 game.



This is most easily performed with KGEN or KGEN98. It can be done with Genecyst, if your timing is really good. Start up the game with the American settings, and once the Sega logo disappears, throw your hardware switch or press ESC, go to the Version Menu, and turn the Japanese setting on, then exit the menu. If you've done this before the first pic comes up, you'll get Japanese text. If not, you'll probably get a bunch of glitched characters, but it does work. Everything about the game that was goofed with will be fixed except a teensy bit of text in the credits. (Ah... And Electra is still called that. Maybe those screen shots I saw before were from a late beta.
