Welcome to the second installment of System Shock! This issue, we'll see what is in my opinion the worst bastardization of the decade... certainly the lowest. So batten down your lunches... this one's a doozy.
In 1993, Irem took the famous, hilarious, internationally-known, and sometimes even lovable characters of Ranma 1/2, and utterly destroyed them (This is kind of remarkable, actually, considering that the Ranma 1/2 characters had been trying to destroy one another rather unsuccessfully for a number of years).
My understanding is that many people lodged informal complaints with Irem in the form of mail bombs (not e-mail bombs .... tick tick tick boom bombs). We claim no responsibility for those events however deserved they may have been. >=)
So sit back, grab your drink, and prepare to watch your favorite characters utterly destroyed. Because we'll let you bring them back. ^.~
Ranma 1/2 Part One vs. Street Combat
I'll resist the urge to give a complete review of the
Ranma 1/2 anime, and just sum it up quickly for those who are not familiar with it. The story revolves around a boy named Ranma Saotome and his curse: If he's ever splashed with cold water, he turns into a girl. His father Genma, who was on the same disastrous trip, turns into a giant panda. Ranma has been engaged in an arranged marriage to Akane, a rather tomboyish girl who hates boys. Ranma, of course, wants nothing to do with her and vice versa.
Things aren't simplified when both boys and girls get crushes on poor Ranma, not to mention Shampoo and Kunoh, who alternately want to date or kill him depending on Ranma's gender at any given moment.
In the game, there's a tournament in which the winner will get to see China. This being where Ranma was cursed, he believes he can find a cure if he can make it back there.
Street Combat's story is far less interesting. You play a bastardization of Ranma by the name of Steven. Steven is off on a quest to kick butt. Ungah.

In the first pic, don't you think it's a little strange that the Tendos didn't notice two dorks called G.I. Jim and Steven fighting in their front yard?
Note the removal of cultural references above.
Even the hidden characters Cologne and the little pervert Happosai (Happy, for short) were butchered. The Street Combat character called Happy assimilated them both. Resistance is futile. I always wanted to see Cologne before her morning shave.
