It's official, Top Gun has been cancelled. So don't bother asking anyone for a top gun game, 'cos it's dead.  I see KMS_21, the KMS imposter is still turning up on the zone. When asked why he was using the initials, he let loose with a mouth full of f's and c's. If you see him, tell him what a dork he is, then shoot him down. Had a really good game with RCAF_Maverick, FT_Wingnut, and a few others. Flew around an island  lol. If you haven't already, try some of the map coordinates that are available from a link off this websites' main page.
Hopefully the new "zone" will be up and running before too long. +PHobgood was telling me that Micro$oft is looking at putting dedicated zone servers in numerous countries around the world. If that is the case, then hopefully lag will become a thing of the past.

Well everyone was having a good chat in Ridge Runners, when up popped a little snotnose called Kyle_E, quoted zones rules to one guy about using caps locks, and then it was all on. Told everyone he was a zone greeter, and implied that he was also a sysop. Now I've got to give this little punk 10 out of 10 for persistence, he eventually got Kaze muted for 3 hours, after calling him a cheat. It started off with 90 people in Ridge and 20 minutes later was down to 63, sysops  were in and out, as he called them back time and again. I guess he took great delight in stirring everyone up and getting them to swear so he could call the sysops in. Then after everything had finally settled down, he decided he wanted to be friends with everyone. This is a guy who has 18 sysops in his friends list. He admitted that he doesn't play CFS, he's into FS98, so I guess there was only one reason he was in CFS.
So everyone, be very careful around Kyle_E, he gets his rocks off calling sysops in. And if you read this Kyle, I think you are the original snot.

I've just found out the secret to lag free games,  fly a camel game. I kid you not, obviously because the plane is going so slow, the screen doesn't need to refresh as fast, so you don't have to transmit or receive as much data.

26-07-1999
Well EchoMadDog and TrenchBull found out the hard way about excessive swearing on the zone. In came the sysop, out they went. Everybody cheered. I'll say it again., I can tolerate some swearing and have even done so myself at times but when you flood the chat with bulls@&t, then it's time to leave.
In a previous news item, I said some things about KMS which were incorrect. KMS_Muleskinner informed me of this today and I removed the offending text and apologized to him.

AT_Dreamsharer tells me that they are expanding to Australia and are forming Charlie squadron for southern hemisphere AT members as well as others wishing to join. At first I thought  hmmmm horning in our turf, but after some thought I think it is a good idea, AT is a well respected squadron and anybody joining will find themselves making a very good choice.Well the New ZealandBlacks thrashed the Australian Wallabies at rugby. Final score was 34-15. Well on our way to winning the TriNations.

21-07-1999
Hmmmmm. Not much happening on the zone, lag's taken care of that.

Here's a fun thing to do if the zone is quiet. Hold down your shift and control keys and doubleclick the Player:# LATENCY/NAME  box in the main chat in Ridge Runners. As soon as the dos box starts to appear let go of the keys.
Alternatively  hold down just the shift key and doubleclick the box, you can now change your chat fonts. Now for those of you who change your fonts then decide to put them back to the default, YOU CAN'T!!  Just exit Ridge Runners then go back in. This knowledge was found while continuing the search for the elusive lag engine that resides on the zone.
London Radio is, strangely enough, very popular, with a lot of people wanting to know where they can download "Coming in on a wing and a prayer" You can obviously hear it on "London Radio" or grab it from the downloads page. All audio requires RealPlayer.

I finally saw first hand a mod in a restricted game last night. Obviously the pilot was using a different name. I spoke to the that person who told me that the plane hoses bullets and has 4 times more armour than normal. Also told me that the dp and cdp files were exactly the same size as the stock ones, so it passed the restricted test. Funny thing is he got 54 kills and I got 38 using a stock hawker. Game was over an hour long, so the advantage was there but wasn't that great. Go figure.

17-07-1999
I saw something I never thought I would see last night, Kaze with a green ping! Not that it made any difference, he still totally outflew me lol. After the game another pilot suggested that I try aiming for the wing, because if you shoot a wing off, they will obviously fall to the ground rather than pumping heaps of lead into the fuselage with no apparent effect. Well I guess that is good for the aces but I have enough trouble hitting any part of the aircraft let alone trying to aim for and hit the wing hehe I guess I need a lot more practise.
On another note, lag has been very weird of late. I've heard stories of pilots shooting the proverbial out of someone and the other person registering absolutely no hits all. SC_PickAxe was in a game where he was shooting a pilot who was actually in the waiting room ,waiting for the game to end so he could join. So guys, think twice before calling anyone a cheat, lag does strange things.

I've had a few comments about the new "radio" on the main page, all good,  and can't think of a more fitting song for CFS than "A wing and a prayer". If you haven't already, go click the button and listen to the words.

A bit of news for Australian internet users. Optus Internet are in partnership with Excite to provide a cable internet service in the latter part of the year. They promise lightning fast connects for gamers etc, so heres hoping.
Some of you might notice a new gauge in the main page cockpit, London Radio, click on it and be transported back 60 years. The DJ will attempt to bring you a range of music. lol
RIP_Bagel was drunk in control of his aircraft, YET again, last night. Funnily enough his aim improves after a few beers.
Keep on drinking Bagel !  lol

Well imposters continue to turn up on the zone, we had an SC_Blowjo on there last night as well as a WA_Kaze_Sux. I just wish their parents would password the computer before they go out. I spoke to  +Rockclimber_2 about it and was told that if a squad registers as a zone clan, a sysop can then get rid of the offender immediately. So if you wish to register just send an e-mail to zidea@microsoft.com with details of your squad, ie members, website etc. I was told, the culprits were KMS members, although I can't confirm that.
Ridge Runners server was falling over badly last nite, so we ended up in the Big Furball, had a lot of fun but once we got to 9-10 players, connections were falling over. A great pity, I'd love to ffa with 16 players, it would be crazy chaos, but a heap of fun.

12-07-1999
The zone has been real bad in terms of lag for the past 3 days. Australian users will be having a real hard time even connecting. I've just signed up AGAIN with Bigpond and cannot even access the site, same goes for Optusnet. Funnily enough I can get on with Ihug, although very slowly. I put this down to Ihug using a satellite link on part of their route.
I saw Chico_Mutafa and _Keebe_ giving AT_AprilStorm a hard time verbally last night. Chico is the guy, who last week told a sysop to shut up and earned himself some mute time. He reckoned he didn't know what a sysop was. My opinion? He should have kept his big mouth shut regardless of who he was talking to. It peeves me greatly that little snotnoses like those two give zone veterans like the AT's a hard time.

I thought I would be smart and hook up 2 modems on 2 phone lines and see what the outcome would be. Now I thought I would do this  because, 1/ my connect to the zone isn't very good, and I need all the speed I can get.  2/ I have a friend in NZ doing it and getting 10kps download speed.  Results of my test?? My connection ran twice as slow as it normally does with just 1 modem. Anyone got any ideas? If so drop me a line.

10-07-1999
Lag City!! That is what everyone calls the zone and it sure didn't disappoint last night. Don't you just love getting booted off the net? Here in Australia we pay 25 cents per local call, this month my call charges have been 10 times my line rental. The pain!!  On a good note, I've just watched the New Zealand All Blacks totally demolish South Africa's Springbok by 28 -0 at rugby.Makes me proud to be a kiwi. Bring on the Aussies  lol.
I see there is another SC wannabe sneaking around the zone, calls himself SC_Mutt. Someone remarked to me that it stood for Skeleton Crew. Not good enough as far as I'm concerned, be a bit like me starting up a squad called  Western Aviation. You just don't do it.

09-09-1999
I've seen some quite times on the zone, but only 8 players, now that's quiet. What to do but sit around telling jokes. got to say, I read some good ones.

08-07-1999
I can't sit down, my bum is sore, Kaze got got a great snap of me exploding in flames. Need I say more? Aaah! I will, Kaze got me 10-6 in both games, so I guess I've got a way to go yet. I see more and more pilots are using the big furball for 16 player games. A lot of fun believe me. Unfortunately lag will always be a problem. I see that the Combatfs.com poll on zone lag has closed with 81.4% (228 votes) saying the lag is unacceptable, while only 18.5% (52 votes) say it is fine. Hmmm, will anything ever be done about it?? I guess because playing CFS is free, the answer will be no.

07-07-1999
A thousand apologies for not keeping the news up to date. Ok, where to start? Combatfs.com has started up a CFS ladder, so all you aces or budding aces out there go and put your name down. . Well it has been a real modem and isp week. I bought a new 56k external modem which burnt out in 2 hours, the shop had no more stock so gave me an internal winmodem as a stopgap. That lasted 2 hours then died. Finally got a replacement external today which is nice and quick. In the meantime I thought I would try out another isp, Ihug, who promised me that they used a satellite link which would give me the speed needed to play on the zone. so I paid them $29.95 and jumped on the net. Imagine my surprise to do a ping and find they use Telstras backbone with 16 hops to the zone. Now that's a funny satellite link. So in 4 months I have tried 6 different isps and find that Telstra Australia controls the backbone into the States, so therefore controls the isps. Strangely, their connection is no better than any of the others. Logical? I don't think so. Ihug has a satellite service which costs $650.00 for the dish, $149.00 for installing the dish, $69.00 setup and then $59.00 a month. Problem is that the uploads are through your own modem. So although you might get up to 400kps download you are limited to 56k or V90 on the upload. Result, I'd still be red to the majority of US zone users.
The conclusion I have reached is that Australia has no decent connection to the zone. Anyway enough of that. Anyone see the five(5) Badjoints on the zone yesterday? I believe Barbie and Gruntmaster were involved  lol

Hello again, for those of you tuning in to the news, sorry for a quiet week, Fortune City in their wisdom decided to change their website around. Result, no uploads to this site!  This site has been doing well in the Avsim top100 websites peaking so far at number 30, if you feel this site deserves a vote, please click the vote button on the main page. Thanks to all those who have already voted.
