directflight/Horizon LLC have put out an updated version of their Combat Expansion Pack. I tried out the original expansion pack and it gives you the ability to save missions, adventures etc, as well as improved visibility. Obviously the new version will include more features.  Price for this prog is US$14.95. Check it out.
I see a new CFS website has started up, Cfsplanet.com  is run by Fsplanet.com  and are affiliated with Simcombat.com and Simflight.com . With their hit counter sitting at 1246, I think they've got a little way to go before the catch up to the likes of their own Fsplanet.com(1491244) , Combatfs.com (1592879) or Simcombat.com (1021212).  Good luck guys!
On the zone an idiot named Wing_of_Death is making a nuisance of himself. A lot of people including myself, feel he is someone quite well known logging on under another name just to be an arsehole. Hopefully just another fool who will tire of it and go away.

A missing man formation was flown in The Big Furball and via ip in honour of Swed4 at 8.00pm GMT. Approximately 70 pilots turned up in Furball with over 30 attempting the formation. For those of you unaware, Swed4 took his own life on Feb. 18/19 2000.

Well I thought I'd be smart this morning, downloaded Microsofts Internet Explorer 5.5 beta. Had the 14 meg downloaded in 40 minutes, installed it and logged onto the net. Thought I'd check this site first, hmmm no transitions, ie fading on the pages, went to the messageboard next and found that it doesn't support redirect, so figured bugger this and hit the uninstall, asked me whether I wanted to go back to my previous browser settings, so I hit yes fully expecting to get back on the net using IE5.01. Nope gave me IE4.01 instead. Checked my mail, no hotmail accounts in there, no mail there! Ok so I have my mail accounts etc backed up and I really shouldn't have trusted Microsoft with a beta, but to ask if I wanted to reinstall my original browser settings and then give me IE4.01. Well that's Microsoft for you. Did it teach me a lesson?  nah, doubt it  lol

You may have noticed a slight change to the news, I've been tidying things and have taken so long to do it simply because of all the things I've reread in the last few hours. Some good laughs and a few shitty times. It also made me realize I have been a part of the CFS community for 13 months. I got CFS for christmas 1998, flew the offline missions and campaigns and one day saw a button  which said play it on the zone. That was it I was hooked. I ventured onto the zone a complete newbie, found out that there were downloadable aircraft and like all newbies flew jets, hurri mk2 c's etc. My favourite back then was the Yak-15 with the junkers jumo jet engine, prick of a thing, didn't like the MS force feedback joystick so I had to fly with absolutely no forces. Never liked the actual mods ie aircraft with unreal flight characteristics and too many guns, so didn't fly them. Got my ass kicked so many times it wasn't funny (still do).
The first squadron I joined was the RNZAF in February 1999, which was renamed a month or 2 later to PFG (Pacific Fighter Group) after a young member sent a virus to some of the members. In May 1999 after too many lag problems, different time zones etc, members from the southern hemisphere left and formed SC (Southern Cross). At the beginning of  August 1999, I left SC and formed Southern Warbirds. I've met some real arseholes in the last 13 months, but thankfully they are outnumbered by the number of genuinely nice people who I can honestly call friends. Yep, it seems like a lifetime. All the games I've had over the years have lasted about 3 weeks, CFS is 14 months old and still going strong. hmm... I think I'm addicted. If you've got nothing to do, check the news archives, I guarantee you'll remember stuff you'd long forgotten.

I've been wondering whether there is in fact going to be a CFS2000. I've heard some guys say they know a friend of a friend of a programmer at Microsoft etc, Microsoft ask people to submit suggestions for a future version, but so far no concrete facts. Go take a look at Crimson Skies  or this screenshot and tell me whether this is what we are getting instead. I hope not.

For the techies and budget conscious:
Just when you thought the Cyrix cpu was dead, up it pops again. Via's Cyrix III processor, which will start shipping in volume quantities by April, is effectively the first clone of Intel's Celeron processor that can fit into the same computer "motherboards" as the Celeron. AMD's processors, for instance, fit into motherboards based around a different design. The first two Cyrix IIIs hit a "performance rating" of 533 and 500. The chips actually run at 400 MHz and 433 MHz, respectively, but they come with 100-MHz, 124-MHz or 133-MHz system buses, faster than the 66-MHz system bus found on the current Celeron. As a result of the faster bus, the Cyrix chips might have a slower clock speed, but they achieve benchmark results that are similar to Celerons running at 533-MHz and 500-MHz. Via said it will sell the 500-MHz-equivalent chip at US$89 and the 533-equivalent at US$99 in volume quantities. Wonder what they're like for overclocking he..he..

I've been working on this website all week, the results aren't very obvious. If you click on an aircraft to download you will get a picture showing you what the aircraft looks like and the file size before the download starts. That way if you don't like it, you can abort the download. The downloads are now on the main page itself, no more burrowing in pages deep to find what you're after.
I found out some more info on the Telstra Bigpond deal. It seems it is a good deal. Their $65.95 a month cable service is real. There are no download or upload limits. If you sign up before June 1st 2000, the installation cost is $99.00 instead of $169.95. This is for an 18 month contract and includes modem and ethernet card. There is also a 3 month contract option for $59.95 a month but the setup cost is $369.95. Bigpond tell me that there is a 4-6 week wait because of demand, which is fine as the start date for the new pricing is April 1 2000.

Here we go again, Telstra Bigpond, Australias' largest telco and ISP is now offering cable internet access for $65.95 per month with a setup fee of $169.95 for an 18 month contract, there are supposedly no download or upload costs and the setup fee includes cable modem and ethernet card.. We shall see I guess. In addition, instead of it costing $44.00 a month for 150 hours using dialup, it will be $35.00 a month plus an extra 5% discount if you've been with them for more than 3 months. Stay tuned,  the fact that Bigpond is government owned leads me to believe there will be other hidden costs.

Home from  hospital, recovering from a double hernia operation. 6 weeks of no work and no lifting. A damned hard way to get flying time in. lol

For those of you unaware of what "Auto Follow" is, it is a carry over from FS98 etc, where, by mapping your joystick buttons or keyboard, you can "slew" and follow another player. That was fine in FlightSim 98 if you needed to follow a 747 but obviously it has no place in CFS. In short you can slew to directly behind another player and fill them full of lead. And unless you know how to detect it, you're gonna lose everytime.
M3_Angel made people aware of this flaw in CFS many many months ago. Those who he told tried it out and found it is in effect the ultimate cheat. Most people, including myself, promptly forgot about, because we felt to make a big song and dance about it would just cause a lot of paranoia and suspicion, and because it had no place in our game. Shadow Squadron have used this to explain their defeat by WA Squadron in an official "Best out of 3" match. The first game WA won 15-14 , the second WA won 15-10, . Each member of WA Squadron have been playing CFS for over a year and have refined their air combat skills to the point where, as a squad they are the best on the zone. WA_Kaze is without a doubt the best pilot on the zone. If he is supposed to have been using this cheat, why has he gone though 8 joysticks in the last year when the simple press of a button gives him the kill?
I think it is about time people started thinking about this instead of panicking. There will always be cheats in every game, but they are not as widespread as Shadow Squadron would have people believe.
Most squadrons including Southern Warbirds have the rule that if any member is found cheating, they will be booted out of the squad. To build a squadron up to the point where the name commands respect from the majority of CFS players is something to be protected.
Shadow Squadron have implied that if a squadron does not join the "Fair Fighting Federation" that squadron has something to hide, Southern Warbirds would have joined but because of the "implications by Shadow Squadron, will not be. SW certainly have nothing to hide, but will not be bullied into joining the FFF. I repeat what I said in a message on their board, "WA do not cheat, they do not need to" ,this also applies to the majority of CFS players.
My motto is "There is always a better pilot in the skies than me" . Seems a lot more people should also fly with that in mind. Contrary to what Shadow Squadron say, 98% of the top zone pilots do not cheat.

13-02-2000
I see there is a lot of mileage being made out of the "Auto Follow" cheat by the Shadow squadron on their website. A lot of zone veterans have known about this for many months. People who have just found out about it are jumping up and down vowing to get people who use it banned form the zone etc. I feel it is somewhat of a knee jerk reaction simply because there are people who will always find a way to cheat. My philosphy is to fly with/against people and squadrons I can trust. So you will always find me in WA, RAF, RCAF games etc.
As you may have seen, our new messageboard is now functional, no ads or anything which is great. prohosting.com are free and  give you the choice of whether you want their ads up. The reason our messageboard is hosted by them is because they are one of the few free sites that allow cgi script

The website has been undergoing a revamp, if any links don't work, please don't get upset, they will be remedied.
RAF662 Squadron have allowed us to host all of the great aircraft by RAF_Prune aka Roger Lowery. These are being uploaded daily.

SW_Radial is home from hospital and recovering from his work accident. Hope you're feeling better Rad.
LMAO The SW_M0J0 imposter continues to appear on the zone when I am not about. I heard he got given a hard time when he turned up at around 3.00am my time. Thanks guys.

New messageboard and forums are now operational, excellent work Dyno. Please note, you must register and supply your own password, so don't forget it.

Fortunecity (the server that hosts this site) has given us a free .com internet address, as well as upping our webspace from 20 meg to 100 meg. This is in recognition of Southern Warbirds being one of their most popular sites. Many thanks and much appreciation to Natalie and the Fortunecity crew. So instead of a long internet address we are now at http://www.cfs-world.com
Anybody thinking of setting up a website, should seriously look at Fortunecity.
In addition RAF_Dynotech is in the process of setting up a new messageboard/forum for us. A big thank you to  Dyno it will make the world of difference.

Southern Warbirds Squadrons' thoughts go out to SW_Radial and his family. Radial was involved in a work accident, where a sawdust explosion caused burns to his head and face.
I note that there is a big problem going on with a crowd called Greenmice, copying and marketing aircraft etc by well known CFS aircraft designers, including those by Bruno Duffort.  I do not know anyone who buys aircraft addons but go check out this thread over at Combatfs.com and join the boycott of Greenmice.
Southern Warbirds welcomes new member SW_Frosty, formerly in the AT squad.
