Round 4 Report
by GM Alexander Khalifman
Kasparov - Kramnik - classical non-event. Kasparov tried to repeat one of the games from the blitz match in Moscow in November 1998 between the same opponents after Kramnik reacted to 4.Qc2 Nimzo-Indian with Romanishin's idea 6…Qf5!? The resulting ending may bring some profits in gambling atmosphere (like blitz in casino) but in classical time limit chess it gives nothing. Quite soon this highly expected clash finished - draw.
Ivanchuk - Adams - nightmare of the day. In the same Nimzo-Indian Michael have chosen sideline 7…Ba6 and failed to equalise. In the ending which happened later in the game White was clearly better and in some moment Adams sacrificed exchange for the pawn. The result of this sacrifice was completely lost position and … one point - Vassily failed to complete his 40-th move and lost on time - 0 : 1
Svidler - Leko - probably Leko was unhappy about his Caro-Kann experience in Linares (see
Round 1) and tried the classical Ruy Lopez line with Nf6 and Bc5. After some complications Black seemed to have good chances to defend his position but played rather passively and Svidler decided the game with one of his best weapons - direct king attack - 1 : 0(?)Anand - Topalov - Vishy continues his surprising opening experiments in Linares. In this game he repeated the theoretical lines which evaluated resulting position as slightly better for Black up to move 23. Then he proved that White is not worse - but not better either. In the ending The Indian grandmaster was even close to overpress but saved the game with tactical means - draw.
