Linares Contest

Of course, we are all waiting for this great event in the chess world. Unfortunately all of us can't take part there. To make it even more entertaining, Grandmaster Chess School and Chess Stars Publishers start the contest where all chess friends would be able to check their knowledge and intuition. So let us know your opinion on who is who in top level chess now and if you succeed you'll get Chess Stars book about one of the great chess champions of the past.

The whole contest will consist of three stages:

  1. Before the show starts - we ask you some questions referring to the whole event and some facts on the history of Linares events. The deadline for submitting the answers will be 14.59 Linares time (CET) ( = 13.59 London = 8.59 New York = 5.59 Los Angeles = 16.59 St-Petersburg (Russia) = 19.29 Madras) on February, 25, 1999. Certainly everybody will know the results of the first 3 rounds but we hope it will not define the answers to our questions.
  2. Single round bids - before every round we'll ask you to guess the results and the openings of the forthcoming rounds. Some other special questions might follow as well.
  3. Every correct answer will bring you certain number of points so you'll be able to follow your run through the contest.

  4. Payday - a couple of days after the tournament we'll announce another glorious winner - the winner of Linares Contest. Three top finishers will be awarded with the books published by Chess Stars.

Jose Raul Capablanca

1-st prize:

  1. "Jose Raul Capablanca. Games 1901-1926", 288 pages, 325 games.
  2. "Jose Raul Capablanca. Games 1927-1942", 288 pages, 321 games.

2 volumes, devoted to great Cuban chess genius and published in the series "Chess Stars", contain all tournament and match games played by the third world champion during his chess career.

Emanuel Lasker

2-nd prize:

  1. "Emanuel Lasker. Games 1889-1903", 336 pages, 356 games.
  2. "Emanuel Lasker. Games 1904-1940", 304 pages, 296 games.

2 volumes, devoted to great chess philosopher, second champion of the world, published in the series "Chess Stars", contain all his tournament and match games.


For the first time in chess practice, all serious games played by these outstanding champions of the past were deeply annotated. All analyses published before were carefully checked, and some new ideas were found in many of them.
The games are annotated with special chess symbols which allow to look fast
through versions of the analyses, the diagrams are present in almost every game. It make much easier to find the critical moments and follow tactical complications.
The games are located in the chronological order, each tournament or match makes
the separate chapter and begins with tournament or match crosstable.
The games in all volumes are classified with opening ond opponent indexes which locate in the end of the book..
Besides at the end of the second volume of both works there are personal scores of Capablanca and Lasker against the strongest chess players of their time.
The best masters and grandmasters from St-Petersburg took part in this work. Grandmaster Alexander Khalifman was performing as chess editor (like in recently published 4 volumes of "Mikhail Tal's Games").

Boris Spassky

3-rd prize:

  • "Boris Spassky's 300 Wins", 382 pages, 300 games.

This book includes 300 magnificent wins of Boris Spassky, tenth champion of the world in the period 1949-1998.
The extensive chess symbol comments, set of the diagrams and the tournament crosstables. About 110 pages of English text contain the details of Spassky's chess career. Classification of the games by opening index and opponents. Personal scores of Boris Spassky against World's best players.
