History of Linares
(just chess)
During 20 last years little Andalucian town became a real metropolis of the world chess. The traditional GM tournaments are held there almost every year and what's the most exciting - these events are not getting weaker as it happened in case of Hastings, Reggio Emilia and some other cities. Some great traditional tournaments even disappeared - Linares lives! Even more - a couple of strong international open tournaments in Linares and Ubeda became another good tradition during the last years.
This is possible first of all due to efforts of the great chess organiser Sr. Luis Rentero Suarez who created this great tradition just on his own. His enormous passion to "King's Game" made little town the real center of the chess world. Unfortunately his decision to join badly smelling WC Council happened to be fatal for him as he was seriously injured in traffic accident a couple of months before. GM School wishes Sr. Rentero good health and a lot of new successful chess projects in the future ( without WC Council, for sure).
Except the traditional GM tournament a lot of high-level chess events took place in Linares recently (including FIDE candidate semifinals and finals). These tournaments aren't the main subject of this page but if you're interested you can download the games of these events in zipped PGN or CB7 format.
This year's edition of Linares tournament is really great as the whole chess world expects some new star finally kicking Gazza's… well, the previous events are also still worth a look. Right now we're glad to offer you the games and results of all Linares grandmaster tournaments. Short stories and some annotated games of every event - to follow in a while…
